Set in the Italian Alps, Lago di Como is a vast body of deep-blue water, surrounded by colorful flowers and brilliant green hillsides dotted with clusters of gold, pink and terracotta homes. Soaring up from the lake, a ring of rugged mountains wear snow-capped peaks even in summer.

The picturesque town of Cernobbio is stretched along its southern shore. Through the oldest part of town, past the elegant shops, restaurants and the ancient church, is a 16th century cardinal's palace called Villa d'Este. The lakeside villa is now one of the worlds most luxurious hotels and is surrounded by 10 acres of private parks and magnificent gardens.

As guests of The Oregonian you will arrive at Villa d'Este on the evening of May 22nd. For the next 3 days, you'll enjoy the extraordinary level of service and the marvelous amenities of this jewel of a hotel where you just might rub elbows with the very rich and very famous. Your stay at the Villa d'Este inlcudes:

  • 3 nights, double room with breakfast
  • Cocktail reception on Tuesday, May 23
  • Hosted dinner on Wednesday, May 24

The hotel and the surrounding area offer a wide variety of sight-seeing and shopping pleasures. Como, located 5 km south of Cernobbio, is renowned for silk production. You can play golf on the course, designed by Peter Gannon, considered one of the most challenging and difficult par 69's in Europe. Catch a steam boat at the nearby piazza and explore some of the other lakeside towns or just enjoy the best scenery in Europe. You can rent a sailboat, a canoe and you can water ski right at the hotel. Or, if relaxing with a good book is your idea of a perfect holiday, the swimming pool at the Villa d'Este floats right on the lake.

On Thursday morning, May 25th, we'll depart by private coach for Venice to join other cruise guests of The Oregonian's and board Crystal Symphony. The ship will overnight there, so you'll have time to explore the city of Venice.

If you'd like to know whether Lake Como is your "cup of tea," watch a film on DVD entitle A Month by the Lake featuring Vanessa Redgrave, Uma Thurman and Edward Fox.
